Some of my favorite pictures from the last 10 days:

Picture taken by my friend, Ben: Maned rat at Trout Tree Restaurant. Possibly my favorite animal that I've seen so far in Kenya, the maned rat is the only mammal known to store toxins as a self-defense mechanism. Its hairs are made up of a "honeycomb" structure, and it fills the hairs with toxins from the poison arrow tree (Acokanthera schimperi) as a defense mechanism. Unsure whether it would even be possible, Ben, Tullio and I went out at 2 am. to try and find the rat - we ended up finding three.

Hyrax that had snuck inside the hood of the car and was driven all the way to Mount Kenya.

At the conclusion of my time in Kenya, my parents and sister flew across the Atlantic to see what I had been up to! After a few days of showing them around Mpala, we all hopped in a puddle jumper and took off for the town of Malindi on the Kenyan coast where we snorkeled in the Indian Ocean, toured museums, explored the ancient ruins of Gedi, and relaxed. It was so refreshing to wind down after my internship with family and friends before heading home. Here are some pictures from our time on the coast! Arrival at Mpala

Hello again everyone! I have arrived in Kenya safely and after spending a day in Karen (a suburb of Nairobi), I am now at Mpala! While in Karen, I stayed with one of my Uncle Dino’s friends, Steve. Steve is a lifelong butterfly researcher and houses a remarkable specimen collection. The collection accounts for over 95% of the total species of butterfly on the continent of Africa (Image 1a/1b) and plays an instrumental role in preserving the biodiversity of butterflies, as well as for conservation efforts such as the sequencing of butterfly genomes. While staying with Steve, I was also able to meet Dino’s friend, Paula. Paula is a filmmaker as well as elephant expert, and listening to the three of them talk over dinner is not something I will soon forget.   Aside from the collection, Steve also houses one of the sweetest furry friends I have ever met: Borris.
